The Education and Fun continue!

Colonial Carolina Summer Camp, Days 3 and 4.

Wednesday, Colonial Carolina educators introduced camper-historians to the colonial household.  They learned about chores and responsibilities throughout the plantation, such as food preparation, storage, and cleaning.  Ms. Leslie taught the young historians about the enslaved people who performed many of these activities.  Campers had a choice of two crafts – Civil War face jug (traditional African-American craft) or colonial teapot (European and colonial ceramic).  Our Drayton artists enjoyed decorating traditional ceramics in their own way!

Thursday, Drayton Hall Archaeologist Ms. Sarah visited Colonial Carolina Summer Camp. Campers touched real artifacts Ms. Sarah and her team found on-site.  Throughout the week, campers created woven artwork on looms and proudly display their work!  Ms. Liz taught young historians about camp life for Revolutionary War soldiers.  (Remember both sides during the Revolution used Drayton Hall as a staging ground!)  They even made their own checker “boards” like those the soldiers carried.  Ms. Amber drilled with our Drayton “soldiers” after learning about Revolutionary War uniforms.

Everyone is looking forward to our student led house tours tomorrow!  We hope to see you here!
